De Ligt remains sidelined with back injury

Football

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has spent over four months out of action as he continues to recover from a back problem.

Matthijs de Ligt has not featured for Manchester United since December 2025. The Netherlands international is currently managing a back injury that has kept him out of the first team for more than four months. According to the Premier League, the centre-back remains unavailable for selection as the 2025-26 season enters its final weeks.

Manchester United medical staff have not yet provided a specific date for the defender to return to training. De Ligt joined the club from Bayern Munich in August 2024 and was a regular starter before the injury occurred. His absence has forced manager Erik ten Hag to rely on alternative defensive partnerships during the recent period, per Sky Sports.

The 26-year-old defender has missed 18 competitive fixtures since his last appearance for the club. United officials continue to monitor his progress at the Carrington training base. The club has not commented on whether the player will be fit to participate in the upcoming European Championship this summer.
