Clubs seek change to Champions League draw rules

Football

European football clubs have proposed a rule change to allow teams from the same country to meet during the Champions League league phase.

Several European clubs have requested a change to the Champions League format to permit domestic rivals to face one another in the opening league stage. The current regulations prevent teams from the same national association from being drawn against each other before the knockout rounds. This request follows a period of significant results for English sides in the competition.

Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal all secured high positions in the recent league phase standings. According to Sky Sports, some continental executives believe the current restriction provides an unfair advantage to leagues with multiple high-ranking participants. UEFA introduced the 36-team league phase in the 2024-25 season to replace the traditional four-team groups.

European club representatives discussed the potential adjustment during recent meetings regarding the next commercial cycle, per The Guardian. Any changes to the draw procedure would require formal approval from the UEFA Club Competitions Committee. The governing body has not yet confirmed if it will implement the proposal for the 2026-27 season.
