Clubs compete for expanded Champions League spots

The race for European qualification intensifies as English clubs aim for a potential fifth Champions League place next season.

The Premier League is currently on track to secure an additional Champions League spot through the UEFA European Performance Spots system. This system rewards the two associations with the highest collective performance in European competitions this season. Manchester City and Arsenal remain strong favourites to secure two of the primary positions, according to the Premier League.

Liverpool and Aston Villa are the leading contenders for the remaining automatic qualification places. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United continue to compete for a top-five finish to ensure entry if the extra place is confirmed, per Sky Sports. Chelsea and Newcastle United also maintain mathematical chances as the season enters its final quarter.

UEFA confirms the new format will feature 36 teams in a single league phase. This replaces the traditional group stage, with the top eight teams qualifying automatically for the round of 16. The final league standings and coefficient rankings will determine the distribution of these additional entries by May, according to reports from The Guardian.
