Chelsea midfielder Chris Atherton has opted to switch his international allegiance from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland. The 16-year-old previously represented Northern Ireland at the under-16 and under-17 levels, notably featuring in the Victory Shield. He holds the record as the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom after debuting for Glenavon aged 13 years and 329 days in September 2022, per the Irish FA.
Atherton joined the Chelsea academy in 2024 and has since featured for their youth sides. The Football Association of Ireland confirmed his availability for selection following the completion of the eligibility process. He joins several other Northern Irish-born players who have moved to the Republic's system in recent years, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
Football Association of Ireland scouts identified the playmaker while he performed for Chelsea's under-18 team. The switch remains subject to final FIFA clearance before he can make a competitive debut for his new nation, as reported by The Athletic.
