Walsall head coach Darren Byfield said he will continue to advocate for increased representation of black managers in football. Byfield noted that while progress has occurred, the number of black coaches in senior positions remains low. He stated he intends to keep "banging the drum" to ensure equal opportunities for minority candidates in the dugout, per Sky Sports.
Byfield joined League Two side Walsall as head coach earlier this season. According to The Guardian, data from the Black Footballers Partnership indicates that black individuals hold fewer than 5 percent of management roles in the English Football League. Byfield suggested that visibility is key to inspiring the next generation of coaches from diverse backgrounds.
The former striker previously managed Tamworth and Redditch United before his move to the Bescot Stadium. He remains one of only a small number of black head coaches currently working in the top four tiers of English football, according to reports from The Athletic.
