The Championship side have named John Rankin as head coach for the rest of the season after Scott Brown departed the club on Monday.

Ayr United have appointed John Rankin as their interim head coach until the end of the current campaign. The move follows the departure of Scott Brown, who left Somerset Park on Monday after 14 months in charge. Rankin previously served as first-team coach under Brown and now takes over with immediate effect, according to an official club statement.

The Honest Men currently sit in the Scottish Championship play-off positions. Rankin brings managerial experience to the role having previously led Hamilton Academical to victory in the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2023. He also spent time as a coach at Heart of Midlothian and Dundee United during his career, per Sky Sports.

Ayr United officials confirmed that the existing backroom staff will remain at the club to support Rankin during the final weeks of the season. The board intends to review the managerial position permanently once the current league schedule concludes in May. The squad returned to training this morning to begin preparations for their upcoming league fixture.
