Architect Dan Meis discusses Everton stadium design

Lead architect Dan Meis has reflected on the decade of challenges faced during the development of Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Architect Dan Meis designed the new Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. He revealed his commitment to the project by getting an 1878 tattoo, which marks the year of the club's formation. Meis first began working on the concept in 2015, according to Everton FC. The project faced several disruptions including the global pandemic and various ownership changes.

The American architect prioritised maintaining the atmosphere of Goodison Park within the new 52,888-seat venue. He focused on a steep home stand to ensure supporters remained close to the pitch, per the Liverpool Echo. The site at the historic dock required specific engineering to preserve the Grade II listed structure while building the modern arena.

Meis remained involved as a design guardian after his initial contract ended to oversee the completion of the waterfront site. Everton is scheduled to move into the new stadium for the start of the 2025-26 season. The club confirmed the venue's naming rights deal with Hill Dickinson earlier this year.
